Holographic Origination Technology

HoloCom Inc. Technical Transfer Division is one of the best in the industry. Our Holographic Consultants provide the latest in technical training in both basic and advanced techniques. Over 15 years of experience in the holographic industry makes our consultants the most qualified in the world.

HoloCom Inc.' intensive six week training course insures a complete understanding of the technology. Training begins with the setting up of the customer's facility. All training takes place on-location, which means the trainees learn on the same equipment they will be operating, not in an already functioning laboratory. Completed training leaves the customer with a fully functioning facility in which all operations conform to international standards involving patents, workplace safety, and environmental impact. All necessary equipment including the Newport Isolation Table, the Liconix Embosser Series HeCd Laser, posts, mounts, and optics is provided. Two levels of training are available, and include: Basic Techniques - Includes training in the production of common diffraction patterns, 2D/3D, and 3D image originations. Included with training are complete laboratory setup and training in troubleshooting common problems. Training in basic techniques provides the customer with an operational facility capable of producing quality rainbow holograms for embossing.

Advanced Techniques - An extension of Basic Techniques training.

Advanced Techniques include multiple-exposures, full color imaging, achromatic, and complex diffraction patterns. Training in advanced techniques requires either an operational laboratory facility or prior training in basic techniques. This training provides the customer with the most up-to-date techniques available.

The customer need only provide a suitable building with adequate electricity, running water, a source of compressed nitrogen, clean room facilities, and a deionizing water filtration system. If the reliability of electrical supply is in question, an uninterrupted power supply may be required for the laser.

Holographic Stereogram Generating Systems

HoloCom Inc. offers three holographic stereogram cameras: a 16mm film type, based on a 16mm motion picture camera; a 35mm film type, based on a 35mm motion picture camera; and a Computerized LCD System. All three systems are capable of creating 3D animated holograms for embossing, and all three require a dedicated laser table.

The Computerized LCD System is based on the system designed by Chromagem Inc. Besides the ability to create 3D animated holograms, the LCD system is capable of rendering computer graphics as a 3D hologram. This system is the current state of the art in holographic stereogram origination technology.

Mechanical Recombining System

The Dimensional Arts' image recombining system is the latest in mechanical recombining technology. It is designed for the creation of diffraction patterns, ganging up small holographic images onto a single shim, and the building of wide web shims for embossing. The recombining system is ideal for use with The Dimensional Arts Light Machine, and the creation of tiled digital holographic patterns. The Dimensional Arts image recombining system is available as a stand alone unit, or in combination with HoloCom Inc.' holographic origination and production equipment. The below specifications are for the 50" x 24" active area recombining system. Custom machines are available for specific applications.

Electroforming

At the conclusion of preparing a photo-resist master, the holographer is left with a laser etched, developed plate of glass that is normally coated with a fragile positive reading resist. Encoded in its surface are the many fine grooves that produce the image. This coated glass cannot be used to emboss copies of the hologram into plastic. Therefore, the electroforming process is used to perform the conversion from photo-resist master to metal master for the subsequent production of copies in plastic or hot-stamping foil.

Electroforming, which has been utilized since the mid-19th Century, is basically an electroplating process in which the substrate plated onto is separated from the plated portion. In other words, the metal master is grown upon the glass master and then separated from it. The resultant metal master is then used to grow further metal masters or "shims", which are used to emboss into plastic or hot-stamping foil.

Due to the excellent reproduction of even the most minute detail, electroforming is perfect for use in the holographic field and, indeed, provides a crucial step in the embossing process.

The standard electroforming system is provided with two types of plating tanks (both using the same equipment - only different strengths of plating solution):
An unstressed sulfamate tank used for growing thicker deposits on the master.
A stressed tank used for growing the thinner stampers or "shims" used in actual production.

Embossing

HoloCom Inc. offers polyester embossing machines from any of the major manufacturers which enables our clients to have the in-house embossing capability which is so vital in today's manufacturing and security markets. Designed with both simplicity and precision in mind, the machines are easy to operate and maintain. Most are fabricated to machine finishes of RMS 2 and manufactured to tolerances of four decimal places. Interlocking safety panels on this equipment should satisfy standards world-wide.

The Model 2012, will produce hot-stamping embossings, polyester, and other select film embossing. It will reproduce mechanical gratings, holography, and laser discs as well. The machine can be completely disassembled, serviced, and reassembled within 30 minutes and all electrical and pneumatic systems are easily and directly serviced in minutes. Machines are shipped ready-to-run.

The Model 2012 is designed around a single embossing roller unlike the old style and less capable two-roller machine. Some significant reasons for the superior performance of the single-roller machine are:
Ease of subsequent timing to rotary machines
Perfect alignment panel to panel
Increased shim life
No mismatched panels due to uneven heat or pressure
Better quality control as operator can view embossing roller during production.
The model EBN and EBA are identical machines with the model EBA being fitted with computerized pneumatic tension controllers for unwinding and rewinding. These tension controllers automatically control unwind, rewind, and intermediate web tension by operating magnetic particle brakes and clutches. This greatly reduces web stretching and allows the EBA to run a much lighter hot-stamping foil than any other machine available. The tension controller also improves registration, reduce wrinkling, curling, and variation, thus reducing waste during starts, stops, and splicing. These attributes are not necessary to all manufacturers and are therefore offered as an option. Below are the technical specifications for the Model 2012:

Converting

HoloCom Inc. offers several quality converting machines including the Newfoil Machine, and the Franklin Model conversion including multi-image/color hot-stamping, over laminating, die cutting, kiss cutting and laddering off of scrap.
Standard features include:

Fully adjustable print and die heads:
Printing heads and cutting dies are adjustable for side to side, front to back, and rotational registration, simplifying "print to cut" registration.
Precise adjustable print and die heads: While the Model 164 is printing, the handwheel may be adjusted for precise front-to-back positioning of the web, thereby locating the imprint in the center of the label stock.
Electronic registration of web feed in .005" or .001" increments through precise stepping motor drive.
The web feed length is adjustable in .005" or .001" increments with digital thumbwheel switches that are easy to read and reach even while the Model 164 is running. The one thousandth of an inch increments mode provides the finest resolution in the industry. All without tools. Downtime is reduced because the operator can compensate for minor heat or usage induced changes in the position of step and repeat plates.
Two motor driven roll leaf advances - Easily adjustable while machine is running.
Adjustable dwell and pressure for better control of imprint.
Variable electronic speed controller - from 1500 to 6500 cycles per hour.
Automatic tension control of supply and rewind.
Solid state temperature control with digital readout.
Simplified leveling adjustments for even impressions.
Easy access, front mounted electric foil rewinds.
Electronic predetermining counter with digital display counts down to zero and shuts off machine.
